Lads,
My bud, Mike Pannone sent me a copy of his new production version "M16/M4 Handbook--an Operational Guide to the Standard U.S. Military Assault Rifle" being sold by Black Heart International(BHI) to check out for him...I have to say that as a former Soldier/Leader, this is a must have for anybody who remembers what it was like to need the right reference for hip pocket training.
Generally speaking, there has never been a pocket sized reference book like this, ever published that truly breaks down the intricacies of using the M16/M4 family of weapons in common vernacular. Written in the same vein as Kyle Lamb's "Green Eyes Black Rifles" (both Mike and Kyle are good friends--Kyle references Mike's influence in his book as well as Mike gives his acknowledgment to Kyle in this book) but only in a hip pocket reference format with standard military flavor.
The book is organized in a very logical and chronological fashion that starts all readers at the very basic level of understanding all the technical references beginning with Rifle Specifications. Mike breaks down the standard operating system of the Direct-Impingement System making it easy for Leaders to teach their youngins the idea behind Stoner's breakthrough theoretical design. The subsequent chapters in Ballistics, Loading Sequence, BRM In A Nutshell, Malfunctions, Zeroing, Maintenance, Cleaning and Lubrication and finally Training Tips makes is incredibly easy for anyone who wants to have a handy reference that they can keep in their pocket, on their kit or just readily available, to quickly grab, read and use to help them right at that critical moment on the range when someone asks that mind stopping question regarding ballistics, sight adjustments or simply how to set the range up for some basic drills.
The last jewel of this handy little book I have to mention are the pearls you'll find in the Annexes. The Annexes break it down even further for everyone to quickly reference all the need to know RIGHT NOW information--Sight Adjustments, Laser Zeroing, Common Optics, Leading a Moving Target and Mindset.
The fact is that this book is an excellent compliment to Kyle Lamb's "Green Eyes Black Rifles". This is definitely another must have...and if you're a Leader, a Soldier, Sailor, Airmen or Marine, or even just an avid shooter who wants to get it right, you need to get this Handbook and keep it handy at all times...

M-16/M-4 Handbook
Recently, while attending SHOT-Show, I had the good fortune to pick-up a copy of Mike Pannone's M-16/M-4 Handbook, an operational guide to the standard U. S. Military Assault Rifle. Mike it seems has really made this handbook user friendly, simple and on point. Most importantly, it's CURRENT! This handbook has a 2008 copyright.
Pocket Sized, it fits nicely in my blue jeans back-pocket, and easily fits inside the standard military BDU cargo pocket, or sleeve pocket of the blouse. As well as inside my 5.11 cargo or back pocket, not to mention the admin pocket of my CamelBak - BFM pack I carried with me for two years while in Iraq. This is an easy to carry for fast access handbook loaded with critical information on the M-16/M-4 U S Military Assault Rifle.
Although this handbook is probably not destined to make it on the New York Times best seller's list; it is sure to make it onto the M-16/M-4 end user's most wanted list; and may well become one of the most referred to manuals of it's kind.
Considering the number of M-16's/M-4's in use today throughout the world; Iraq's recent order of 14,000, and those which will be coming online in the near future in Patrol cars across the USA, this handbook should be a companion sold with the rifle.
This handbook is definitely a must read for all current and future M-16/M-4 shooter's. In addition, this handbook should be issued to every Soldier, Marine, Sailor, Airman or DOD Contractor who is either issued an M-16/M-4 or deploys with one. Every Patrol Officer being issued a Patrol Rifle in his vehicle, for deployment while on the Beat, and SWAT Cops alike should also have this handbook either in the team room, or in their rifle bag for quick reference.
New shooters, and veteran M-16/M-4 users alike, will all find this handbook a valuable resource. An easy to use reference book on the range, or team-room while cleaning or maintaining weapons after an extended patrol, or assault.
Important end user notes are shared in each of it's 9 chapters, and four annexes. It is chock full of current, up to date information on the M-16/M-4. From basic maintenance and nomenclature; equipment checks and adjustments, ZEROING, to emergency/malfunction procedures, training and target selection, this handbook has it all. In a clear, concise easy to read, handbook.
